BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
AT THE OPENING OF ASEAN SCOUT JAMBOREE 2008
IN BUMI PERKEMAHAN PRAMUKA, CIBUBUR, JAKARTA
OCTOBER 19th 2008
Bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim,
Assalaamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,
Peace be upon us,
Excellencies, Ministers, and Ambassadors,
Chairman, National Board of Commissioners of the Gerakan Pramuka,
Chief Commissioners and Chairman of NSO organizations of ASEAN member countries,
Scouts, participants of the ASEAN Scout Jamboree 2008,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Salam Pramuka!
First of all, please allow me to welcome
you all to this beautiful part of Indonesia. It is indeed a pleasure and
priviledge for me to speech you for this annual gathering of future
leaders and visionaries. At last, our scouts across the region have his
own platform and vision, one that will guide us through the 21st
century. We all face a great new world. One defines by interconnectivity
and borderless sinergy and also by danger and uncertainty. If you or
your family invest in the stockmarket, you only little look at your
stock portfolio to understand how uncertain the future looks.
Many countries are facing both an energy
and a food crisis. Economic turmoil of the part political instability
and we all fear that prospect. But when I look at all your faces, I feel
so much hope because in your faces I see the accomplishment of history
and a promise of the future. I don’t need to tell many of you how noble
scouting is. In Indonesia, its development has reflected the goal of our
nation. Our first scouting associaton was established in 1912, and
hundreds of other associations across the archipelago. After Indonesia
declared sovereignty, the various scout groups became one, symbolizing
the unity of Indonesia. Throughout the years Gerakan Pramuka in way big
and small had embodied our nationalist spirit, teaching our children the
importance of working together or helping others or bravery, integrity,
humanity, and physical, and mental rebellion.
Gerakan Pramuka has taught Indonesian
throughout the years, the fulfillment that come with serving your
family, your neighbour, your community, and your country. Gerakan
Pramuka teaches that the inner peace come not just with respectful one
another, but also with a respect for nature and for one’s deeds and
actions. Indeed, Gerakan Pramuka is a holistic endeavour. After all, its
emblem is the coconut. In Indonesia, all part of the coconut are used
in everyday life. So, it is great as scout who must need the most out of
every aspect of his or her life. Indonesia would not be what it is
without Gerakan Pramuka.
And look at what it is now. The world
largest scout association with more than 8 million members that ASEAN
organizing achievements. That legacy can’t be replicated. I am sure it
has been in many communities across ASEAN, none of our country would be
what we are today, without men and women, young and old, induce
inclination toward service. Indeed, for many of us, it is an impulse.
Sounds of its service a better world for all, and a better world for my
family. This unspeakable sense of service has benefited all of us, ASEAN
should benefit too. For many years, communities across South East Asia
has not understood ASEAN very well. It is foreseen simply as a club for
elite officials.
Yet, looking at all your faces, it does
not feel that way. Indeed, gathering like this can change the face of
ASEAN, so that people will view ASEAN as a forum for everyday people.
Gathering like this provide us opportunity to better understand one
another, to share our thought and aspiration and to work together to
achieve our set dream of prosperity for all. As they say, to have or in
this case hundreds and thousands are better than one. Let us not feel
just one nation, let us feel a regional community. One that will help
its citizen overcome the challenges of globalization. Some of you may
ask surely the problem of the world can not be solved by a few weeks of
camping. But let us consider that the glass is halfful. I can’t think of
no better way to have our son and daughter face our uncertain future
than to arm them with a moral compass based on mutual respect and
friendship, based on goodwill and solidarity. A moral compass provided
by our scout association.
I can’t think of no better way to have our
children save their world than by linking them with youth from other
nation to share their hopes and values. Politician often speaks of
investment, I can not think of a better investment than an investment in
our younger citizens. Yes, you need factory, and road, and bridges, and
powerplant. But, who builds powerplant, who operates factories, who
designs bridges and tunnels, people? The answer is people, young men and
women who believe in hardwork, in excellence, in cooperation, and in
overcoming problem. This jamboree is only one investment in our youth. I
hope we will have many similar investments in the future.
Delegation often talks of peace. Standing
here under a bright blue sky and among clouds scenery, we actually feel
of this with nature and with ourselves. We can in a vision of a more
peaceful world. This jamboree can be the incubator for this can do
spirit, for this unspeakable belief in our power to change the world.
What I call in Indonesian Semangat Harus Bisa. Let me share with you
some wise words that I hope will go part in your life: What your thought
because they will become word, what your word for they will become your
actions, and what your actions because they will become habit, what
your habit because it should your character, finally, what your
character for it become your best thing.
This gathering is a celebration of
promise, of the promise of our youth, of the promise of our nation, of
the promise of regional cooperation and globalization. This gathering is
also a celebration of wisdom, the wisdom of our allure that work
established scout rules and the wisdom of nature. Let us hope that the
celebration begins and even brighter new era for scout rules across the
region.
Before I conclude my speech, I believe all
of you agree that we were all impressed by the theme song of the ASEAN
Scout Jamboree 2008: Wake up! I may call Wake up everybody! Wake up
scouts! Wake up ASEAN! Wake up the world! Let’s save our future! Let’s
save humanity! And let’s save our planet! Finally, I wish to thank all
of you who have worked hard to make this jamboree a reality. To all
participants of this ASEAN Scout Jamboree, let me congratulate you on
this momentum occasion and by saying bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim, I hereby declare The First ASEAN Scout Jamboree 2008 opened. Thank you.
Wassalaamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh.
